Fire Support Vehicle M1131 Stryker at Smardan Training Area, Romania.

Externally, the Stryker FSV is quite similar to the Stryker RV, with both having the power-assisted cupola for the commander which is armed with a machine gun or grenade launcer and which features a sensor suite. Both also have a similar smoke grenade launcher layout. This crew is taking part in training for Operaton Atlantic Resolve-South with Romanian tankers in TR-85M1s. Fire Support Vehicle M1131 Stryker in Mosul, Iraq.

This vehicle is fitted with slat armor designed to protect against antitank rockets and missiles, which necessitated repositioning the vehicle's headlight clusters. The spatial relationship between the machine gun and the sensor pod can be better seen in this image. Note also the smoke grenade launchers on the vehicle roof. The driver's wire cutter is erected, while the commander's is folded forward. Here, PFC Xavier D. Coleman, fire support specialist, Company A, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, walks beside the vehicle while SSG Jonathan A. Garner, fire support noncommissioned officer, A Company, mans the machine gun. (Picture taken 20 Oct 2005 by SPC Jeremy D. Crisp; available from Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System.)

The same vehicle and crew from the above image is shown here. Visible on the coupola rim between the machine gun and sensor suite is the inertial navigation unit box, which accurately determines the vehicle's location. PFC Coleman is standing up through the squad leader's hatch in this picture. (Picture taken 20 Oct 2005 by SPC Jeremy D. Crisp; available from Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System.)

The rear M240B machine gun is mounted on this vehicle, and the commander's cupola is provided with shields with ballistic windows. Just aft of the cupola can be seen two empty smoke grenade launcher mounts. The slat armor on the rear ramp prevents it from opening all the way to the ground. This fire support team from A Company, 52d Infantry Regiment, was providing forward observation for C Battery, 4th Battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment, during live fire certification.
