Pz.IV/70(A) (Sd.Kfz.162/1) was a turretless tank destroyer based on chassis of the Pz.Kpfw.IV tank. Pz.IV/70(A), which was topped by a superstructure designed by ALKETT, was seen as an interim solution until numbers of Pz.IV/70(V) could enter service. ALKETT's design was a modified superstructure from the Jagdpanzer IV, but fitted to the tank hull with the addition of a 50cm vertical base. The driver was provided with a standard driver's visor in the vertical base. The heavy gun and frontal armor taxed the suspension of the Pz.IV/70, and the front four rubber-tired road wheels were replaced with steel tired models. Improvements to the Pz.Kpfw.IV chassis were grafted onto Pz.IV/70, like flash-suppressing mufflers and the deletion of a track return roller.

Pz.IV/70(V) (Sd.Kfz.162/1) was similar to Pz.IV/70(A), except VOMAG's version was based on the Jagdpz.IV instead of the tank chassis. The lower superstructure necessitated that the driver peer through periscopes in the superstructure plate instead of a visor. Late-production vehicles had a gun travel lock to assist with the weight of the weapon when not in combat.

Both Pz.IV/70(A) and V were also modified as command vehicles, with additional communications equipment and a radio operator added to the crew.
