This is an early production sturmhaubitze, as evidenced by the muzzle brake threads, welded howitzer mantlet, and the applique armor bolted to the right side of the superstructure front. The side-hinged, split front hull access hatches are visible, and the attachment point on the hull front was for a headlight.

This StuH42 is a later production model. It retains the welded mantlet, but the superstructure right front plate is now 8.0cm (3.1") thick, the muzzle brake has been deleted, and all-steel return rollers are present. The howitzer of this vehicle is in recoil, and may have been destroyed by its crew.
