Panzerkampfwagen III Ausfuehrung J at the US Army Ordnance Museum.

This tank, a Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.J (Sd.Kfz.141/1), shows the additional spaced armor bolted to the hull and gun mantlet and the 5cm gun. The towing eyes are extensions of the hull sides, and the rear-mounted smoke candle rack has been replaced by the triple-barrel smoke dischargers on the turret sides. These smoke dischargers first appeared in 1943. The turret vision ports have been deleted on this tank, but the hull escape hatches remain. Spare track shoes are stored on the hull front between the cast cooling air intakes.

Panzerkampfwagen III Ausfuehrung L at the US Army Ordnance Museum.

This tank, although armed with an apparent dummy 3.7cm gun, sports late production features such as spoked drive sprockets and idler wheels, forward placement of the first return roller, towing eyes extended from the hull side plates, and lack of turret vision ports and hull escape hatches. The tank also has a stowage box on the turret rear and the 3-barrel smoke dischargers. The first road wheel is missing, and the swing arm is visible.
