Jagdpanzer IV (Sd.Kfz.162) was based on the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F tank. The front hull shape was altered to incorporate a sharp nose, and a low sloped superstructure replaced the normal superstructure and turret. The Pak 39 was mounted in the front plate offset to the right, and was flanked by two machine gun ports. The driver peered out of two periscopes mounted in the hull front plate. In March of 1944, the left side machine gun port was deleted, and in May the armor of the Jagdpz.IV was thickened to 8.0cm (3.1") frontally and 4.0cm (1.6") on the upper sides. The muzzle brake was also omitted from the Pak 39 starting in May due to the large firing signature it created. Improvements to the Pz.Kpfw.IV like steel return rollers were also applied to the Jagdpz.IV.

Jagdpz.IV were also used as command vehicles, and these had a radio operator added to the crew.
